VIDEO: Robert De Niro, Chef Nobu Matsuhisa Attend Nobu Atlanta Ground-breaking at Phipps Plaza
Bye bye, Belk and Hello, Nobu Atlanta, a dynamic new Japanese fusion restaurant and 150-room hotel project scheduled for the north side of the iconic Buckhead shopping destination, due in 2021. This was the scene on a parking deck as celebrity investor and two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro and Nobu namesake Chef Nobu Matsuhisa gathered on Thursday, Oct. 18 for a ceremonial “ground-breaking” with a Styrofoam wall, hardhats and sledgehammers.
Interviewing him for Atlanta magazine (between requests to pose for selfies with fans), a beaming De Niro told me, “I think Nobu will work very well in Atlanta.”
Later this fall, the Phipps Plaza massive retail space that was most recently home to discount retailer Belk will be razed to make way for a new office complex and retail, restaurant and hotel space that will open in stages in 2020 and 2021.
Below are renderings of the new project.
